The Faculty of Law at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State, has sparked widespread discussion and controversy after incorporating the viral ‘Lamba for Lambo’ saga involving Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy and socialite Sophia Egbueje into a law examination question.
The ‘Lamba for Lambo’ controversy first gained public attention when Sophia Egbueje claimed that Burna Boy had promised to buy her a Lamborghini following an alleged intimate encounter. The dispute quickly went viral, with social media users debating the credibility of her claims and whether there was any legal merit to the alleged agreement.
A video uploaded by @lifeof_mezuu has now revealed that the Faculty of Law at UNIPORT used this real-life controversy as part of an examination question for law students. The two-page exam paper featured a three-mark question directly referencing the case.
The question posed to students read:
“In what is now known as the ‘Lamba for Lambo saga,’ Sophia had a one-night stand with Burna Boy, with the agreement that the latter would buy her a Lamborghini Jeep. Burna Boy reneged on the agreement, and Sophie is contemplating bringing an action in court to enforce the agreement. Advise her (3 marks).”
The unexpected inclusion of a high-profile pop culture reference in an academic setting has sparked diverse reactions online. Some social media users found it amusing and praised the lecturers for making legal education more relatable, while others questioned whether such a case could realistically hold any legal weight in contract law.
Many legal professionals and students have joined the discussion, with some arguing that agreements of this nature may lack enforceability under contract law due to issues such as consideration, legality, and intent. Others believe it presents an interesting case study on verbal agreements and the legal principles surrounding them.
This is not the first time popular culture has influenced academic discourse in Nigerian universities. Law faculties often use real-life cases to engage students in critical thinking about legal principles and their application in contemporary society.
The video of the exam paper, now making rounds on social media, continues to fuel debates about whether social contracts like the alleged ‘Lamba for Lambo’ agreement could ever be upheld in a court of law.
