A tragic incident has sparked outrage after a pregnant woman in labor lost her life due to a hospital’s refusal to provide treatment over her inability to pay a required ₦500,000 deposit.
The heartbreaking ordeal was shared in a viral post on X, formerly known as Twitter, leaving many social media users in shock and sorrow.
In the distressing video that has since circulated widely online, the pregnant woman was seen inside a car alongside her husband while still clinging to life as they rushed to the hospital.
Her husband, visibly desperate, could be heard in the footage frantically pleading with her to stay awake and hold on for the sake of their children.
His emotional cries filled the car as he tried to keep her conscious, repeatedly calling her name and urging her to fight for her life.
“My goodness, Kemi, look at me. Stay strong, look at me. Think about your kids, please. You need to be very strong for me,” he pleaded in anguish.
Despite his efforts, the woman appeared weak and barely responsive, struggling to hold on.
According to the caption accompanying the video, the couple had initially taken the woman to a hospital, but the facility refused to admit her because they could not afford the ₦500,000 deposit required for treatment.
Left with no choice, they were forced to seek help elsewhere. Unfortunately, before they could secure medical attention at another hospital, the woman tragically passed away.
This incident has sparked an outpouring of anger, frustration, and heartbreak among Nigerians, who have taken to social media to condemn the hospital’s actions and demand justice for the deceased.
Many have called for urgent government intervention and a review of healthcare policies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Below are some reactions from concerned individuals who expressed their thoughts in the comment section:
@ihe69: “This is very painful. When I lost my wife in 2020, money was available, but it was time to go, in accordance with the will of God. People die even in the world’s best hospitals. If it wasn’t the will of God, she would’ve survived one way or the other. May her soul rest in peace.”
@enejih7: “What is going on in this country??? What?? A pregnant woman?? Mhen!!! This is bad.”
@LightUp_9ja: “This stupid nonsensical act! When you bring in a patient who desperately needs URGENT medical attention, instead of treating & providing first aid, they demand money first. The hospital that denied this innocent woman should be investigated, and justice must prevail.”
@AkoredeShotayo: “Ha, my God, how do we explain this?”
As discussions about the incident continue to trend, many are calling on authorities to take action against hospitals that prioritize payment over human lives.
