A viral photo of a male National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member kneeling before his Local Government Inspector (LGI) has ignited widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians condemning the act as an abuse of power and intimidation.
The controversial image, which was first shared by a Facebook user named Waltino on Sunday, March 16, has sparked heated discussions about the treatment of corps members during their service year.
In his caption accompanying the image, Waltino hinted at the struggles corps members face, writing, “This is what we are passing through but if we talk now.”
The photo has drawn strong reactions from social media users, with many questioning why a university graduate should be subjected to such humiliation. Some have labeled it an outright display of bullying and an excessive show of authority by the NYSC official.
Others argue that the NYSC program has deviated from its original purpose and requires urgent reforms to protect corps members from mistreatment by officials.
The backlash against the NYSC comes at a time when another controversy is brewing within the organization. A female corps member in Lagos recently made headlines after openly criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over rising inflation and economic hardship.
She alleged that her remarks went viral, drawing the attention of the NYSC board, which reportedly threatened her over her public comments.
