The tragic death of Nigerian businessman, Mr. Nnamdi Joseph, in police custody in Douala, Cameroon, has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for justice from both Nigerians in Cameroon and human rights organizations.
What started as a seemingly minor accusation of a stolen car headlamp quickly escalated into a case of wrongful detention, medical negligence, and alleged extortion, ultimately leading to his untimely death under suspicious circumstances.
According to reports, Mr. Nnamdi was arrested and detained by the Cameroonian police despite a lack of concrete evidence linking him to the crime. During his time in detention, his blood pressure soared to a dangerous level of 193/105. Rather than ensuring he received appropriate medical care, police officers allegedly administered Tramadol, a painkiller unsuitable for individuals with high blood pressure.
Witnesses claim that as his condition worsened, he repeatedly pleaded for urgent medical attention. However, police officers reportedly ignored his distress and even delayed his release, allegedly demanding bribes from his family before allowing him access to proper healthcare.
Tragically, Mr. Nnamdi’s condition deteriorated beyond recovery, and despite finally being taken to a hospital, he passed away shortly after arrival.
The shocking incident has led to widespread condemnation from the Nigerian community in Cameroon. In response, the Consul General of Nigeria, Ambassador Enya Francis Ntui, has vowed to escalate the matter, demanding full accountability from Cameroonian authorities for the wrongful detention, medical neglect, and extortion that contributed to the businessman’s tragic death.
Nigerians in Cameroon, who are widely known for conducting lawful business activities, have raised concerns about police misconduct and the increasing cases of Nigerians being unfairly targeted and mistreated by security personnel. Many fear that without swift and decisive action from both Nigerian and Cameroonian authorities, similar incidents could continue to occur.
Activists and legal experts are calling for an independent investigation into Mr. Nnamdi’s death, emphasizing the need for reforms in the treatment of foreigners within Cameroon’s law enforcement system. They insist that justice for Nnamdi is justice for all Nigerians and are urging authorities to take necessary steps to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
