A Nigerian man has taken to social media to expose a Bolt driver who allegedly stole his laptop during a ride and later fabricated a story to extort ₦150K for its return.
The man detailed his ordeal in a viral post on TikTok, narrating how he booked a Bolt ride, unaware that it would turn into a nightmare. While on the trip, the driver allegedly managed to remove his laptop from his bag without him noticing.
Upon reaching his destination and discovering the laptop was missing, he immediately contacted the driver, who repeatedly denied any involvement. Frustrated, he sought help from Bolt’s customer support, only to be met with silence and no assistance.
After persistent calls and pleas, the driver suddenly changed his story, claiming that another passenger who entered the vehicle after him had taken the laptop. The twist deepened when the driver later insisted that the supposed passenger had handed the laptop to someone else, who was now demanding ₦150K for its release.
Realizing he was being deceived, the man decided to outsmart the driver. He pretended to believe the story and agreed to pay a portion of the demanded sum. Using a carefully planned strategy, he lured the driver into a trap that eventually led to the recovery of his stolen laptop.
Sharing his experience, he wrote:
“I’m calling out @bolt_nigeria today, just to warn everyone that if you ever get robbed by their driver or lose an item, you’re completely on your own. Their support is so bad that they trust the driver over the actual victim. Absolutely ridiculous.”
He further revealed how Bolt failed to assist him, forcing him to conduct his own investigation.
“I booked a ride from Ikate, and when I arrived at my destination, I realized the driver had taken my laptop out of my bag. I tried reaching out to him multiple times, but he refused to answer my calls.”
“My entire life is on that laptop. I’m a music producer, and I have people’s careers depending on it. Losing it would be devastating. Bolt, please help me track down this driver and get my laptop back.”
Despite reaching out to Bolt’s customer service, he claimed they remained unresponsive.
“I reported the issue to Bolt, but they’ve gone completely silent. Up to this moment, they haven’t said a word. No help, no update—nothing. But well, my story continues.”
In a follow-up post, he explained how he managed to set a trap for the driver.
“@bolt_nigeria I begged this guy countless times to return my laptop, but he kept denying he ever had it. That’s when it hit me—I was completely on my own. So, I decided to handle it myself.”
“After two days of pleading, he finally came up with a story: he claimed a female client he picked up after me had taken it.”
“I knew it was a lie, but I played along. He then said he’d go to the girl’s place in Ogba to retrieve it. I acted grateful, telling him, ‘God bless you, bro. You’ve really done enough for me.”
“Three hours later, he called back, saying he was at the girl’s place, but she wasn’t there. Instead, she had supposedly left the laptop with her boyfriend—who was now demanding ₦150K to release it. I told him I’d send half now and the rest when he arrived. He hesitated, claiming the guy wouldn’t release it without full payment.”
“I kept pleading and eventually convinced him to take ₦50K, promising he’d get the balance when he got to me. Then he offered to help by contributing ₦30K himself, saying I could pay him back when he arrived. Again, I played along, acting thankful. ‘Wow, brother, you’ve really tried for me. May God bless you.”
The plan worked perfectly. The driver showed up with two other men, completely unaware that he was walking into a setup.
“And just like that, he walked right into my trap. He actually came with two other guys—clearly knowing what he was doing. I won’t go into all the details, but let’s just say I handled the situation. And I took him to the cops. Most importantly, I got my laptop back.”
He concluded by warning people to be extra cautious when using ride-hailing services, stating that not all drivers can be trusted.
