A Nigerian man has publicly criticized the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) after experiencing an unusually high electricity bill through his prepaid meter, which consumed ₦150,000 worth of electricity within just 10 days.
In a moment of frustration, he pleaded with the electricity provider to revert him to the estimated billing system, claiming that the prepaid meter was financially draining him.
Sharing his grievances on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the man demanded that EKEDC retrieve the prepaid meter, emphasizing that his electricity costs had skyrocketed beyond his control.
His exact words were: “₦150k finished in 10 days. EKEDC, come and collect your prepaid meter back. Return me to estimated billing.”
Following his post, numerous social media users flooded his comment section, sharing their opinions and personal experiences with prepaid meters and electricity billing in Nigeria.

@DrJoeAbah: “😂😂😂 I now tell my security people to put the changeover on neutral during the day to let the solar and inverter really do their work. That’s the only way I can stretch N100k to 10 days.”
@dollings_: “There’s no reason why electricity should be this expensive. I doubt there’s anywhere in the world where it is this expensive.”
@RxYulan_: “Walahi, prepaid meter bill especially for Band A is crazy. E shock me when 200k light finish in just 13 days.”
@lexyy4real: “150k ke? Are you running a cold room? Egbon just go on complete solar at this point.”
@shittu27: “Bros that bill is huge ooo. Well, I have been using a prepaid meter for over 10 years now. AC, iron, borehole, deep freezers are the enemies of prepaid ooo, they suck units like mad.”
@omobabaijebu101: “Same thing I’m facing here. My prepaid meter was installed just about 10 days ago, and already 100k light don finish. When I was complaining of 45k estimated billing.”
@olamikaye: “Change us to Band A, that’s when we started getting lower electricity supply and crazy spending on units. They should just put us back to Band B in Surulere.”
@Daddyfresh2: “I warned you when you were agitating for the meter. 90% of people using prepaid meters are bypassing it. And I know with your caliber, you can’t do that.”
