Mohamed Salah has expressed his willingness to extend his stay at Liverpool beyond this season, but the club must reconsider its contract policy regarding veteran players to ensure his continued presence at Anfield.
This revelation comes from Liverpool legend Michael Owen, who insists that Salah remains committed to the club, provided he receives a contract extension that reflects his value and contributions.
Salah’s current contract with Liverpool is set to expire on June 30, 2025, and while negotiations for a renewal are ongoing, no final agreement has been reached yet. Owen believes that the Egyptian star is eager to remain at the club, but Liverpool’s existing policy of offering only short-term contracts to players over the age of 30 may be a stumbling block.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Owen highlighted Salah’s exceptional professionalism, fitness, and dedication as reasons why Liverpool should make an exception to their contract policy.
“Mo Salah wants to stay. In fact, I’m pretty sure he wants to stay,” Owen stated. “Liverpool might have a rule of only offering two-year deals to players of his age, but he’s no normal player.”
He continued, “He’s fit, dedicated, and unbelievably professional. I’d bend the rules and give him the contract length he wants.”
Owen also pointed out the financial implications of losing a player of Salah’s caliber, arguing that securing his future at Anfield would be a more cost-effective move than attempting to find a suitable replacement in the transfer market.
“If Liverpool let him go, they’d have to spend over £100 million to replace him, and that’s without considering if his replacement will be as consistent,” Owen added.
Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has cemented his status as one of the club’s all-time greats, scoring an impressive 243 goals across all competitions and playing a pivotal role in Liverpool’s successes, including their Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cup victories.
Despite Salah’s desire to remain at the club, uncertainty looms over his future as contract negotiations continue. The situation is further complicated by growing speculation surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold, another key Liverpool player, who is reportedly considering a move to Real Madrid.
With manager Jürgen Klopp set to leave at the end of the season, Liverpool’s upcoming decisions regarding Salah’s contract and the overall squad rebuild will be crucial in shaping the club’s future.
As fans eagerly await an official announcement, Salah remains focused on delivering strong performances on the pitch, helping Liverpool compete for domestic and European honors in what could be a defining season for both the player and the club.
