Embattled Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has reacted to the intense verbal clash between former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, and Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North during a Senate hearing on her petition against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The heated exchange unfolded on Tuesday, March 26, during a session of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions. This session was convened to deliberate on allegations presented by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal counsel, Abiola Akiode, and petitioner Zubairu Yakubu regarding Akpabio’s alleged misconduct.
The altercation began when Zubairu Yakubu attempted to speak while the Committee Chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, was addressing the room. His microphone was swiftly muted to maintain order, but the situation quickly escalated when Ezekwesili attempted to intervene.
Senator Nwaebonyi immediately interrupted her, leading to an intense verbal exchange between the two lawmakers. Angered by his actions, Ezekwesili sternly responded, saying: “Comport yourself and stop making noise.”
This remark infuriated Nwaebonyi, who fired back with harsh words: “You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here.”
Refusing to back down, Ezekwesili responded by calling Nwaebonyi a “hooligan,” which further escalated tensions within the Senate chamber. Security aides and other senators had to step in to restore order and allow the session to proceed.
Following this dramatic incident, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan took to social media to express her admiration for Oby Ezekwesili, acknowledging her courage in standing up against verbal abuse.
On her official X (formerly Twitter) account, she wrote an emotional tribute, stating:
“Dr. @obyezeks, Ma’am, I apologise for the insults. Know you took them for me… for us… as a mother and as a leader. Know that you are a true icon of integrity, courage, and visionary leadership. Your unwavering commitment to good governance, education, and democracy continues to inspire generations. A champion of accountability… Nigerians appreciate you. I celebrate your brilliance, resilience, and selfless service. You are a hero. #Leadership #Inspiration.”
Her post quickly gained traction, with many Nigerians rallying in support of Ezekwesili and commending her resilience in the face of political hostility. The incident has sparked debates on decorum within the Nigerian Senate and the importance of mutual respect among lawmakers.
