Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of Oyo State and a respected mathematician and technocrat, has died just days before his 90th birthday.
His death was announced in a statement issued by Oladapo Ogunwusi on behalf of the family on Sunday.
The statement, titled “Victor Olunloyo Goes Home,” described him as a revered figure whose legacy spans decades of service to Nigeria and humanity. His contribution to the development of the nation was immense, leaving an indelible mark on both the political and educational sectors.
“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo… former governor of Oyo State, mathematician, engineer, and renowned technocrat,” the family said in their statement. This tribute reflects the deep respect he garnered throughout his lifetime of public service and his commitment to the betterment of his community and country.
Dr. Olunloyo was a man of numerous accolades and titles. He held the esteemed titles of Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, which were testament to his standing in the Yoruba community and his contributions to the cultural and historical preservation of the region. He was also the pioneer Rector of both The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and Kwara State Polytechnic, two vital institutions in Nigeria that benefitted greatly from his leadership and expertise in the field of education.
The family further acknowledged his long-standing contributions to the nation, describing them as a source of immense pride. His death, while deeply sorrowful, is marked by the profound impact he had on Nigerian society through his career and his influence in various sectors, including education, governance, and public service.
Plans are underway to give him a befitting burial, with the family requesting that the public respect their privacy during this period of mourning. They have stated that details regarding funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.
In April 2024, false reports of Dr. Olunloyo’s death had surfaced online, which he personally refuted in an interview from his residence in Ibadan. At the time, he stated, “I’m still here, not yet gone,” expressing concern over the growing trend of unfounded death rumors circulating about public figures. His response was a reminder of the often harmful effects of false information and the toll it can take on individuals and their families.
Reflecting on his life at the time, Olunloyo noted, “My father died at 42, while my mother lived to 102. I’m 89. I’ve crossed the expected life age.” These words, filled with gratitude and a sense of acceptance, underscored his remarkable longevity and his ability to live a full and accomplished life. He also mentioned a previous incident in 2022 when similar false reports claimed he had passed away at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, further highlighting the prevalence of such rumors and his resilience in the face of them.
