Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has stated that he is yet to make a decision on whether he will contest in the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku made this revelation during an interview on Untold Stories, a yet-to-be-aired television program hosted by Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie. His statement has sparked widespread speculation about his political future and the role he might play in Nigeria’s next general elections.

However, uncertainty remains regarding who will emerge as the leader of this opposition alliance, with notable political figures such as former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai being considered as potential flag bearers.
When questioned about his intentions for 2027, Atiku responded, “I don’t know because there has to be, first of all, a viable platform, more than any other time in the political history of this country, particularly since the return of democracy.”
Despite his uncertainty, Atiku, who has contested for the presidency six times, did not completely dismiss the possibility of another run. He expressed deep concern over the state of the country and stressed the need for experienced leadership to address Nigeria’s growing challenges.
“I have not seen Nigeria in such dire need of experienced and credible leadership as it is now. We had a similar merger in 2014. About three or four of us contested for president, and we all supported the one who emerged, and he won,” Atiku remarked, referencing the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the eventual victory of Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 election.
While it remains unclear whether Atiku will officially join the race, his recent political moves indicate that he remains actively engaged in the opposition’s strategy to challenge the current administration in the upcoming elections.
