Daddy Freeze speaks on relationship with Hushpuppi, explains why he won’t condemn him

Media personality Daddy Freeze has opened up in detail about his relationship with convicted fraudster Hushpuppi and explained why he refuses to condemn him, despite the public backlash and Hushpuppi’s fraud conviction.

Recall that Hushpuppi was arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2020 in a high-profile operation involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Following his arrest, he was extradited to the United States to face charges related to various fraudulent activities, including money laundering, cyber fraud, and other financial crimes that had significant global implications.

Following Hushpuppi’s arrest and subsequent conviction, Daddy Freeze faced intense criticism from social media users and the general public for previously associating with him. Many Nigerians and online commentators labeled the media personality as someone who knowingly socialized with an alleged criminal, questioning his judgment and integrity. The backlash was particularly strong because Daddy Freeze had been seen in viral videos and photos dining and socializing with Hushpuppi in Dubai before the latter’s arrest.

Now, five years after Hushpuppi’s dramatic downfall, Daddy Freeze has chosen to break his silence and share his side of the story, shedding light on his personal relationship with the controversial figure.

According to Daddy Freeze, he was friends with Hushpuppi despite harboring suspicions about the source of his wealth. However, he maintained that his friendship with Hushpuppi was based on personal loyalty rather than financial gain or any form of direct involvement in illegal activities.

“Hushpuppi has never given me money before, not even $1,” Daddy Freeze clarified. “But Hushpuppi gave me something that many others didn’t—friendship—at a time when nobody wanted to be associated with me. There was a period when people believed I was the devil, and I was largely rejected by those I once considered friends.”

He went on to narrate how he first met Hushpuppi, emphasizing that their initial meeting took place during a sponsored trip to Dubai, where he had been invited alongside other social media influencers. He stated that, despite being in the company of influencers, he felt ostracized because many of them did not welcome him due to his controversial views on religion and his #FreeTheSheeple movement.

“The first time I met Hushpuppi was when I was selected along with some influencers for a trip to Dubai. At that time, I had already started my movement (#FreeTheSheeple), and because of that, many of the influencers didn’t like me,” he recalled. “It was also during this period that the church I attended for over a decade rejected me. I felt isolated. Everybody turned their backs on me.”

Daddy Freeze then revealed that it was Hushpuppi who reached out to him via direct message (DM), offering a friendly invitation to meet up in Dubai. “Then Hushpuppi sends me a DM saying, ‘Where are you? Come over.’”

He recounted that after responding to Hushpuppi’s invitation, they hung out in a group setting with other friends. They spent time together, had conversations, and took pictures, which Hushpuppi later shared on his Snapchat account. This was how their friendship developed, and for Daddy Freeze, it was an act of kindness that he could not overlook, regardless of what later happened with Hushpuppi.

“So we hung out with some of our mutual friends, and we had discussions, laughed, and took pictures,” he said. “Hushpuppi posted those pictures on his Snapchat, and that’s how people started associating me with him. But to me, he was someone who was there for me when almost everyone else rejected me.”

The media personality admitted that while he may have suspected that Hushpuppi’s source of wealth was questionable, he didn’t have concrete proof at the time. He also made it clear that their friendship was not based on financial transactions but on genuine human connection and support during a period of personal adversity.

“I might have guessed that his money was not legit,” he confessed. “But at the end of the day, who am I to judge? In one of his songs, Davido said, ‘Dey for who dey for you.’ That’s how I see it. Hushpuppi was there for me when others weren’t.”
